Vintage "Secret to Happiness" Charm
A whimsical charm circa 1950, in 14k yellow gold featuring three wise monkey charms hung on a gold ring demonstrating the maxim "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil". The phrase "Secret of Happiness" is enameled on one side of the ring, suggesting that refraining from nasty thoughts and bad deeds will insure a happy life.
Makes a wonderful solo statement but works well with a collection of interesting pieces to tell your personal charm story.
Details: Approximately 1" long not including the jump ring. Weighs approximately 4.5 grams. Marked for 14k on the back of the ring and the bail of one of the monkeys.
Condition: In excellent condition with a light vintage patina.
History: The three wise monkeys depict an ancient proverb that dates back to at least to the 8th century. "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" encapsulates part of the Confucian philosophy of conduct, with the monkeys first making an appearance on a 17th century Japanese Shrine.
