Victorian Mourning Ring with Diamonds & Pearls
Dating to the 1840s, this Victorian mourning ring has such an elegant design: four creamy (likely) natural pearls with a hint of iridescence arranged around a chunky old mine-cut diamond, and silvery bright rose-cut diamond accents. The designs on the shoulders remind me of flying swallows, themselves an ancient symbol of a soul's ascension to heaven, the details picked out in black enamel.
Originally the ring had a locket compartment behind the cluster of stones, that likely held a curl of hair, though the lid and contents are long since separated from the ring.
Details: Measuring a hair shy of 1/2" north to south (11.8 mm) at the center front, tapering through the shoulders to 2.1 mm at the center back.
Not marked for gold content but XRF tests to solid 12k. Weighs approximately 3.5 grams.
Size: Size 9 1/2, because of the enamel detail on the shoulders sizing is not recommended.
Condition: In excellent antique condition with a rich patina and expected age-related wear to the black enamel on the shoulders and subtle abrasion to the diamond and setting. Please examine photos.
