Victorian Lily of the Valley Black Enamel & Pearl Bangle
An elegant Victorian bangle circa 1885, crafted in 10k yellow gold with a stylized lily-of-the-valley design on black enamel backround, the motif set with seed pearl accents. Likely a mourning bangle, and possibly originally one of a pair; in the 19th century bracelets of this type were commonly worn in sets of two, one on each wrist.
Engraved on the inside "Katie from Mother".
Details: An oval shape approximatey 5/8" wide, measuring approximately 2 1/4" by 1 7/8” across the inside diameter with an interior circumference of approximately 6 1/2". The hinge is sturdy and the box clasp secure. Not marked for gold content but XRF tests to 10k. Weighs approximately 27.5 grams.
Condition: In excellent condition with a gentle patina and minimal wear to the enamel, with a couple of light dings on the inside of the bangle but no obvious dents or scratches to mar the outside surface.
History: When used in mourning jewelry, according to the traditional language of flowers, lily of the valley symbolizes purity, sadness and hope of resurrection, sometimes referred to as the Tears of our Lady, in reference to Saint Mary, and was often used in funeral bouquets for women.
