Victorian Intaglio Roman Warrior Pendant
A Victorian fob pendant in an unusual teardrop shape, featuring a carnelian intaglio of an ancient warrior. This type of intaglio was extremely popular in the last half of the 19th century, styled after ancient Roman jewels and meant to infer bravery, strength, integrity and loyalty.
Originally meant to hang from a gentleman's watch chain as a decorative fob. The carving is quite nice, and the bezel is beautifully crafted in rose-tinted yellow gold-fill: a more affordable option to a heavy karat gold version that doesn't sacrifice the style of an expensive piece.
Details: Measuring approximately 1" north to south and 7/8" east to west including the decorative bracket. Hung from a contemporary 20" rose gold-filled cable chain.
Condition: In excellent antique condition with a light patina to the surface of the metal.
