Victorian Heart Shaped Bloodstone Locket
This mid-19th century locket appears to be carved of specimen jasper but it's actually art glass of deep velvety green with a random red-dot pattern that perfectly mimics the matrix of natural bloodstone. It honestly fooled me and I'm an agate/jasper nerd, but when I realized it was glass I actually loved it more because it's an incredible re-creation.
The yellow gold arabesque border that frames the heart so neatly is perfectly flush with the surface, a feat that would not have been possible if actually carved of bloodstone so probably why glass was used. The little six-pointed star in the center glitters with rose-cut diamonds, a gorgeous compliment to the rich color behind it. A glazed lid on the back opens to a compartment large enough for a small memento like a lock of hair or discreetly folded note.
Details: Crafted in 18k yellow gold and measuring approximately 1" high, not including the large bail, and 3/4" wide. Hung on a 14k 21"1.5 mm curb chain. Not marked for gold content but XRF tests to 18k, the chain is marked on the clasp for 14k.
Condition: In excellent antique condition. The bloodstone glass shows light wear to the surface but no disfiguring scratches or chips. The foiling of the diamonds has moderate oxidization. The glass lid on the back has a chip at the point of the heart and a few light nibbles along the beveled edge, with light surface wear. The locket opens smoothly and stays shut when closed.
