Victorian Carved Lava Lion Pendant
An antique lion cameo carved in lava in the mid-19th century, set in a sterling silver sunburst circa 1880. Lava carvings of this time were usually done in Italy, based on ancient motifs uncovered during Mediterranean archeological expeditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. Such pieces made popular “Grand Tour” souvenirs for wealthy travelers, and lava carvings were often set as jewels in gold or silver.
We found the cameo unmounted and with a little ingenuity fit it into a Scottish brooch that had lost its central agate panel. While the beast does resemble a pup in some ways, a quick survey of ancient Etruscan and Byzantine art confirm the source for this particular representation.
Although if you say all you see is your dog there, I can't say I'd blame you.
Details: The pendant measures approximately 1 1/2" in diameter, the sterling silver cable chain is 18" long.
Condition: In excellent antique condition with a rich antique patina to the silver, some light wear to the details of the carving and some marks on the back of the pendant- please see photos.
