Victorian Bird & Wishbone Brooch
An antique brooch circa 1890, featuring a rose-cut diamond studded dove holding a sapphire flower in it's beak, framed by a gleaming gold wishbone. Symbolizing faithfulness, true love and hope, it was likely originally intended as a bridal gift from fiancee to betrothed.
A thoughtful choice as a "something blue" bridal gift.
Details: Measuring approximately 1 1/4" east to west and 11/16" wide. Marked 15c for 15k on the back, indicating English manufacture. The stones are all natural, the diamonds are very bright and eye clean but weight is difficult to determine as they are rose-cuts with assymetrical facets and flat backs. The brooch weighs 3 grams.
Condition: In excellent condition with a light patina.
History: Sometimes called a "merrythought" in Great Britain, the wishbone has symbolized good luck, or luck to come, since the Middle Ages. It was a very popular motif in the late 19th and early 20th century, especially in combination with other visual references to good fortune and best wishes.
