Vintage Plique à Jour Enamel Horus & Scarab Brooch

$690.00

A vintage Egyptian Revival brooch designed with a carved art-glass scarab flanked by twin figures of Horus, the Egyptian falcon-headed protector god. The wings are detailed with green plique-à-jour enamel, and the eyes of Horus accented by gleaming red paste stones.

Details: Measuring approximately 2 7/8" wide by 3/4" high. With a stamped purity of 935 silver on the back and Egyptian hallmarks on the pin stem, with an arabic letter date indicating manufacture in the late 1940s.

Condition: In excellent vintage condition with a light patina but no obvious scratches, chips or scratches to the enamel. The hinge and clasp are in strong working order.

History: Plique-à-jour is French for " letting in the daylight", and it's an incredibly time consuming enameling technique requiring an advanced level of skill. Similar to cloisonné in that it uses defined areas for the fields of glass enamel powder to fire, but without the backing of metal to keep the material in place.
