Pink Maireener Shell Necklace with Antique 14k Clasp

$465.00

We've strung vintage mid-century pink maireener shells on matching silk cord, finished with a Victorian tube clasp. Their rainbow tinged glow is magical, while the pink color is a product of dye, the iridescence of the shells is natural.

Details: Measuring approximately 16" long. The antique clasp is not marked but XRF tests to 14k.

Condition: In excellent vintage condition, the shells are free of cracks with evenly distributed color and vibrant iridescent nacre.

History: Maireener shell jewelry still holds an important place in Tasmanian Aboriginal tradition, as it has for centuries. Shell necklaces were originally made as adornment or tokens of honour, as well as valuable objects for economic trade or barter; shells pierced for a necklace have been found in ancient burial sites dating back 1800-2000 years. In the mid-20th century it's been documented that a wholesaler named Bertie May began commissioning jewelry from Aboriginal artisans, supplying them with shells he had dyed in bright pinks, blue and purple. We believe the shells here were orginally part of one of these so-called "Hobart" necklaces, circa 1940-60.
