Art Deco Morpho Wing Sulfide Cameo Necklace

An antique Morpho butterfly wing pendant necklace, circa 1925 set in sterling featuring a white sulfide cameo of a figure in classical robes. The iridescent blue backround shifts in the light, changing from twilight-blue to glowing electric teal. 

The figure against this gorgeous display is a striking and dramatic combination. I love the attention to details, like the tiny butterfly and the straps of the sandles. 

Details: The pendant measures approximately 1 1/2" long, not including the decorated bail, and 1 3/16" wide. Marked on the back for "sterling silver" with a number that likely refers to the original catalogue design. Hung on an 18"" sterling silver cable chain.

Condition: With a gentle antique patina and a couple of very slight dings to the back of the pendant speaking to it's dignified age. The butterfly wing in in very good condition with only slight darkening around the border edge. The sulfide figure is complete and clear, often these pieces can be discolored by exposure to moisture or air and the sulfide suffer chips or flaking.

History: Thomas Mott is credited with introducing this type of morpho butterfly wing jewelry at the British Exposition of 1924. Sulphide figures encased in glass have been around since the early 19th century,  a process of encasing a ceramic medallion completely in glass.
