Georgian Hygeia Intaglio in 14k Signet

$3,100.00

An impressive signet ring featuring an early 19th century carnelian intaglio carving of Hygeia set in a contemporary 14k yellow gold signet. The smooth bezel and substantial mounting are strong complements to the fine details of the figure: Hygeia's flowing robes and her writhing snake are masterfully chiseled.

Perhaps originally meant for a male hand this would be a fantastic statement ring for a woman.

Details:  Measuring approximately 15/16" north to south and 11/16" east to west across the bezel face. A heavy solid construction with the band 3.90 mm at the center back.  Marked for 14k gold, weighs approximately 11.2 grams.

Size: Hits size 8 on the mandrel and should fit true to size, perhaps slightly snug depending on your finger. Resizing slightly is possible, within 1-2 sizes. Please send us a message before purchase if you are interested in the details of our sizing service.

Condition: In excellent condition with crisp details and very light wear to the top of the stone, with a couple of tiny edge nibbles.

History: According to ancient Greek mythology Hygeia was the daughter of Asclepius the god of medicine, and the guardian of good health and longevity, by way of personal hygeine and the philosophy of preventive medicine; she is often depicted with the snake of wisdom and a bowl representing medicinal cure. Her cult grew in influence after the appearance of plague in ancient Greece, and its philosophies influenced the inclusion of good hygeine in medical practise of the time, as a way to keep the body and mind healthy and fit.
