Georgian Tassie Seal Pendant, "For Auld Lang Syne" in 14k

$1,700.00

An early 19th century glass wax seal intaglio, featuring the motto "For Auld Lang Syne" and a taproom scene of a pair of friends with glasses raised in a celebratory toast. Encased in a sturdy 14k yellow gold double-sided bezel at some point in the last 20 years, it makes a wonderful statement today, commemorating good friends and good times.

These so-called "Tassie" seals were made by James Tassie, and later his decendents; Tassie was a Scottish gem-engraver who developed a process in the late 18th century to replicate hand-carved intaglios in molded glass of various colors.

Details: Measures approximately 15/16" high and 1 1/16" wide. Not marked for metal content but XRF tests for 14K. Weighs approximately 13 grams.

* The last photo shows the pendant styled on a chain, please note the chain is not included.

Condition: In excellent condition with some light wear to the face of the seal but no obvious or deforming chips or scratches.

History: Before the invention of an envelope conveniently painted with adhesive along the flap, people used a drop of melted wax impressed with a carved seal to secure the privacy of their correspondence. The carving was done in reverse so the sealing wax would be impressed with the writer's personal motto, crest or insignia in a readable direction: essentially a return address of sorts.
