Georgian Book Press Intaglio Wax Seal

$400.00

Circa 1830, a wonderful little intaglio wax seal fob carved in chalcedony with a teeny tiny book press. A quick Google search shows some crossover between linen presses and book presses, but we feel fairly confident this is meant to refer to bibliography.

Details: The fob measures approximately 5/8" high by 5/16" in diameter across the base. The fob itself is gold-filled, hung from a 20" gold-filled cable chain.

Condition: In excellent condition with a light antique patina and some wear to the surface but no obvious chips or scratches.

History: Before the invention of an envelope conveniently painted with adhesive along the flap, people used a drop of melted wax impressed with a carved seal to secure the privacy of their correspondence. The carving was done in reverse so the sealing wax would be impressed with the writer's personal motto, crest or insignia in a readable direction: essentially a return address of sorts.
