Georgian Mourning Ring with Woven Hair, Pearl & Enamel

$2,400.00

An immaculate antique Georgian mourning ring, crafted in 18k yellow gold with a lustrous split pearl halo around the center compartment which holds a momento of woven hair under crystal.

The shoulders are delicately articulated in a baroque scroll design, accented by glossy black enamel, and the ring is fully hallmarked for 18k, London manufacture, and letter dated 1828.

Pieces such as this are sometimes referred to as "deed box" jewelry, meaning they were bequeathed as momentos after the passing of a dear friend or relative and then put away for safe-keeping, not meant to be worn but preserved.

Some mourning jewels have survived in remarkably pristine condition this way, and likely this is one such ring.

DETAILS: Measures approximately 1/2" north to south at the center front, tapering through the shoulders to 2.22 mm at the center back.

SIZE: The oval shape of the shank makes it difficult to size accurately on a modern mandrel but it fits comfortably like a 5 3/4- 6. Not resizable due to the enamel on the shoulders.

CONDITION: In excellent condition.
