Art Nouveau Amethyst Caduceus Ring
A beautifully detailed and weighty Victorian signet-style ring circa 1890, crafted in sterling silver set with an oval amethyst of richly saturated velvety purple. The shoulders are chased with a motif that reminds me of a caduceus with a cherubic face wearing a winged headdress and entwined snakes extending down and around the hoop.
Details: Measuring approximately 9/16" north to south and 7/16" east to west across the amethyst as set, and a rise of approximately 1/4" above the finger when worn. Not marked for metal content but professionally tests to 925, sterling silver. Weighs 8.5 grams.
Size: 7 1/4 and slightly resizable, we can emulate the design across the join if enlarging. Please send us a message before purchase if you are interested in the details of our sizing service.
Condition: In excellent condition with a light patina and a few light marks but nothing obvious or distracting. The stone has a few subtle natural inclusions and some minimal abrasion along the facet edges, visible with magnification.
History: Amethyst has a rich and varied gem lore history. Traditionally the stone is said to bring its wearer happiness, love, internal peace and spiritual fulfillment. It has been worn to aid in battling the grip of addictions and alcoholism, in fact the origins of its name are found in the Greek word 'amethustos,' meaning 'sober.'
In 1912 it was adopted by the American National Jeweler's Association as the official birthstone for February and is considered the birthstone for the zodiac sign Pisces. It's also a traditional gift for the sixth wedding anniversary.
