Antique Garnet 4-Leaf Clover Brooch
A lovely Victorian four-leaf clover brooch set with tear-drop shaped garnet cabochons, or carbuncles. The word "carbuncle" is an antique term for this type of Almandine garnet, and derives from the Latin meaning "live coal" or burning charcoal, an apt description for the smouldering intensity of the stone's color: appearing almost black-red in some lights and glowing ruby in others.
Details: Measuring approximately 1 1/4" long by 1" at the widest. The hinge is in strong working order, the original c-clasp was replaced at some point by an early safety clasp. The brooch is made in tombac, an alloy used in Eastern Europe specifically for the type of jewelry, with a rose gold wash.
Condition: In excellent antique condition with very minimal wear to the stones and some moderate oxidization of the metal.
