Bloodstone Intaglio Signet "Virtute Non Sole Floreo"

$1,500.00

Originally the focal point in an antique Georgian wax seal, this skillfully carved bloodstone intaglio was set at some point in its history in a circa 1920 10k yellow gold signet mounting.

The oval stone features a hand extended upward holding a flowering branch with the latin motto "Virtute Non Sole Floreo," which our latin consultant translated to "I flourish with power, not with the sun," engraved on a ribbon banner underneath.

The bloodstone itself, with its deep rich color and intensely shaded iron oxide matrix, is a rare and beautiful example of this type of jasper.

Details: Measures approximately 5/8" north to south at the face, tapering through to 3.55 mm by the center back of the band. Total weight approximately 6.1 grams. Marked inside the band with a hallmark for 10k used by the Ripley-Howland Manufacturing Co, jewelers out of Boston, Mass. from 1883-1931.

Size: 4 3/4, resizable down slightly but not up. Please contact us before purchase if you are interested in the details of our sizing service.

Condition: In excellent antique condition with a light patina, slight marks to the metal, and an area of slightly lighter gold at the back as evidence of an antique resizing. There is some light surface rubbing with very slight nibbles to the edge of the stone, visible with magnification.

History: Traditionally bloodstone is known as a hero's stone, a talisman for strength, bravery and determination in the face of danger: either danger from within or from outside forces. As a healing stone it's considered beneficial for blood, heart and circulatory health and has been used as a charm to reinforce the bonds of love and affection in romantic relationships.
