History: Retro jewelry is a coin termed by François Curiel, the head of Christie's jewelry department in New York in the early 1970's. It's a style that orginated in Europe in the 1930s initiated by some of the designs exhibited by Van Cleef and Arpels at the 1939 World's Fair. Restrictions on platinum and silver during WWII revitalized the popularity of yellow and rose gold while several factors influenced the bold motifs of the 1940s so different from the delicacy of previous decades.

Hollywood was producing films geared towards providing escape from some of the grim facts of wartime. Starlets decked out in statement jewelry crafted in rich gold set with large colored gemstones inspired the public tastes towards the same. As well, the Duchess of Windsor's aesthetic had a huge influence on the fashion of the day and she was photographed frequently wearing her latest commissions from Van Cleef and Cartier.
