Georgian Rose Cut Diamond Cluster Pendant
We found this antique 18th-century Georgian foiled rose-cut diamond cluster as part of a broken brooch and thought it deserved a second chance at a happy life, so we repurposed it for the modern world with a 14k bail.
The perfect delicate statement on its own, and a romantic touch of antique cachet added to your daily necklace curation.
Details: Due to the nature of the setting we can't determine the diamond weight, but the oval center stone measures approximately 4.65 mm by 6 mm in the original sterling and gold bezel cup setting, with a frame of smaller round diamonds averaging 1.7 mm each. The pendant is 5/8" long, hung from a fine 18k 16 3/4" cable chain that weighs 3.1 grams.
Condition: In excellent antique condition with age-appropriate softening of the cut-down collet ribbing, light abrasion to some of the stones and a slight smoky oxidization of the foil.
History: Backing gemstones with foils was common practice in the Georgian period of the 18th and early 19th century as a way to enhance the reflective qualities and color of a jewel. It gives a stone like this a lovely glitter in soft candle light as well as a brighter glow in modern halogen.
