Antique Enamel Owl Necklace
A gasp-inspiring 14k antique Art Nouveau enamel owl necklace, circa 1895, originally a brooch we converted using 14k rolo chain. The ombré shades of golden yellow to a subtle teal are matte finish with a translucency that reveals the exquisite detail of the feathers underneath, and provides a contrast backround for the slightly iridescent river pearl the owl seems to hold in its claws. A river pearl drop and the glitter of bright old mine-cut diamond eyes are the finishing touches.
Details: The owl measures approximately 1 3/4" long from tip of ears to bottom of the drop and 1" wide. The 14k rolo chain provides an 18" necklace length, with a total weight of approximately 11.8 grams.
Condition: In excellent condition with a couple of wear spots to the enamel that are very difficult to notice (please examine photos) The back shows light marks from the removal of the pin findings, not visible when worn.
History: The owl is traditionally held to be a symbol of truth, prophecy, artistic skill and wisdom. They are associated with the Greek goddess Athena who carried one on her shoulder to advise her and who was believed to be able to take the bird's form at will.
They are also believed to represent the feminine side of the moon and their ability to see clearly while hunting at night is regarded as symbolic of an ability to see through to the heart of a matter. It's thought an owl can be regarded as a talisman to promote one's own clear headed thinking and emotional or spiritual balance.
