Victorian Butterfly Earrings

$0.00

This product is unavailable

Victorian earrings circa 1880, crafted in 14k gold, both yellow and rose-tinted, engraved with butterflies on all sides of the cube-shaped drop. A couple of the butterflies have platinum overlay; this mixed metal approach was inspired by traditional Japanese metal craft and became popular after Japan was reopened to Western trade in the 1850s.

The combination of Etruscan revival filigree accents with this Asian aesthetic is a beautiful example of the varied artistic influences driving jewelry design in the latter half of the 19th century.

Details: Measuring approximately 7/8" north to south from the curve of the ear wire to the bottom of the drop, with a weight of  2.8 grams for the pair. Not marked for gold content, the drops XRF test to 14k, the ear wires to 12K.

Condition: In excellent antique condition with a gentle antique patina speaking to their age and history.
