Victorian Enamel Anchor Locket
A sweet little Victorian locket in yellow gold-fill, circa 1880, enameled on the front with an anchor in baby blue. The compartment on the back is protected by a glass cover, deep enough to hold a photo or flattish memento like a pressed flower or lock of hair.
For centuries, the anchor has symbolized hope as adopted by the Christian faithful, but even before that it represented safety and strength, especially to ancient seafaring cultures. Originally this would have hung from the end of a lady's watch chain as a decorative fob, but today it makes a lovely token of faith and determination.
A thoughtful "something blue" bridal gift.
Details: Measuring approximately 15/16" north to south, including the attached bail but not the jump ring, and 5/8" east to west. Hung from a vintage 18" gold-filled cable chain.
Condition: In excellent antique condition with a light patina and some subtle wear to the enamel near the top of the anchor. The compartment is lined with the original silvered paper and the glass cover has light wear but no obvious chips or scratches.
**Note: we will send this out with the compartment lid off so you can easily place your memento. Once the lid is pressed in it is possible to remove again but must be carefully pryed open with a blade.
