Antique Silver Filigree Operculum Bracelet

$380.00

An antique filigree bracelet, circa 1900, crafted in silver set with seven operculum, the protective cover that certain sea and land snails produce to close themselves inside their shells to stay safe from predators.

Often referred to as "Shiva's eye" or "cat's eye", operculum are traditionally considered amuletic and jewelry set with them was especially popular in the late 19th century; Victorians were notoriously superstitious and favored wearing such amulets to fend off illness and bad luck.

Details: Measuring approximately 7 1/4" long and 1" wide. Tested to 900 silver, likely Italian made.

Condition: In excellent condition with a gentle patina speaking to dignified age, with minimal wear but no apparent damage or chipping to the operculum. The clasp and hinge are in secure working order.
