Antique Garnet & Diamond Turtle Pendant

$2,500.00

I love this sparkly little turtle, circa 1910 crafted in sterling silver featuring a velvety-red garnet cabochon or carbuncle as his shell surrounded by rose-cut diamonds; the bail is in gold, with a rose-cut diamond accent. His details are lovingly rendered, from the tiny claws of his feet to the pattern on his belly.

The term "carbuncle" is an antique term for this type of Almandine garnet, and derives from the Latin meaning "live coal" or burning charcoal, an apt description for the smouldering intensity of the stone's color: appearing almost black-red in some lights and glowing ruby in others.

Details: Measuring approximately 1 3/8" north to south including the bail, and 3/4" east to west. Not marked for metal content but XRF tests to sterling silver, the gold bail to 12k.

Condition: In excellent antique condition with a gorgeous patina and very light wear to the garnet, but no significant chips or scratches.
