Antique Foiled Diamond Ring

Perhaps intended originally as a betrothal pledge, this early to mid 19th century ring is likely of Dutch origins and features a large foiled rose-cut diamond in the center, set in a sterling silver cut-down collet or bezel, flanked all around by smaller rose-cut diamonds, their smoky glitter a perfect complement to the glowing sparkle of the central stone.

Details: Measuring approximately 10.7 mm north to south at the center front with a 2.28 mm width at the center back of the band. Not marked for metal content but professionally tests to 18k gold and sterling silver.

Condition: In excellent antique condition with age-appropriate wear to the tops of the stones, softening of the collet ribbing and oxidization or darkening to the foil. The center stone is irregularly shaped and has light natural inclusions. The hoop has some slight evidence of possible re-shanking, visible on the inside of the band under magnification.

History: Backing gemstones with foils was common practice in the Georgian period of the 18th and early 19th century as a way to enhance the reflective qualities and color of a jewel. It gives a stone like this a lovely glitter in soft candle light as well as a brighter glow in modern halogen.

Important care note: rings with foil backed stones should never be immersed in water: remove before showering, dish washing, water skiing, etc. Moisture could get behind the stone and cause the metal foil to oxidize and darken. An accidental splash shouldn't be a problem but you don't want to submerge the ring for any period of time.
