Victorian Carved Hand Talisman Necklace

$650.00

A late 19th century talisman, this skillfully carved hand wears a gold bracelet and holds a golden rod. Victorian society was especially superstitious and representations of hands in various poses were popular ornaments to ward off various and sundry evils both physical and metaphysical.

DETAILS: The charm measures approximately 3/4" long and 5/8" wide, carved from natural material, likely bone or ivory, with 9k rose gold bracelet and rod. Hung on a 19" 14k rose gold cable chain .

CONDITION: In excellent condition with a light antique patina and subtle wear to the details.

HISTORY: The symbol of a right hand holding a rod, staff or scepter has several meanings throughout history. But specifically in the 19th century it was a reference to the spiritual omnipotence of God, with the hand itself representing the divine entity and the rod or sceptor representing both the power and authority God wields, as well as the enlightenment bestowed on the truly faithful.
