Edwardian Butterfly Wing Locket Necklace

$400.00

Circa 1910, a sweet antique Edwardian butterfly collage locket crafted in sterling silver with a glass viewing window on one side and pinstripe and monogram engraving on the other; it opens to reveal space for two photos, with purple embossed paper backround inserts. The butterfly is assembled from actual specimen wing and colored paper, composed against a backround of light flax and dried flowers, as if flitting about in a summer field.

Butterfies are thought to bring happiness and good luck while the sight of two butterflies flitting about together is believed to be a harbinger of true love. The use of butterfly wing for personal adornment has been a traditional Chinese art form for centuries and carries significant symbolic meaning.
