Victorian Scottish Agate Arrow Brooch
A Victorian Scottish agate arrow & bullseye brooch circa 1880. Crafted in sterling silver in a perfect statement size, inlaid with pieces of red and green jasper, and bloodstone (aka "Scottish pebbles"). The stones are incredible in their precision, with a subtle variety of color and pattern.
Details: Measuring approximately 2 7/8” long and 1” at the widest. XRF tests to sterling silver.
Condition: In excellent condition with a light patina. No visible chips or scratches on the stones. The c-clasp and tube hinge are in strong working order.
History: This style of work has been a traditional Scottish craft for centuries, but in the 19th century Queen Victoria helped propel such "pebble" jewelry to large scale popularity, after she and Prince Albert purchased Balmoral in the 1850s. Known to collect native jasper, agate and cairngorm specimens during walks along the estate, Victoria would sometimes have the stones fashioned into pieces to give as gifts to favored members of her court.
