Victorian Lapis Lazuli Vinaigrette Locket in 18k
In the mid-19th century, when this 18k yellow gold and lapis lazuli vinaigrette locket was created, life could sometimes be rather smelly. Whether due to the odor of trash and other unmentionables in public spaces, or antiquated ideas of personal hygiene making close quarters unpleasant, a bit of aromatic vinegar or perfume soaked cotton carried inside such a device made things much more bearable.
This example is particularly well made, the hand-pierced grille lifts on a sturdy hinge, and the compartment itself is spacious enough to carry a small memento. When closed the lid stays firmly shut, and it could still be used today to hold a bit of cotton infused with your favorite perfume.
Details: Measuring approximately 7/8" high, not including bail, and 3/4" wide. Not marked for gold content but XRF tests to 18k, the bail tests to 14k. Weighs approximately 8.1 grams.
Condition: In excellent condition with a light patina and minimal wear to the stones. The gold on the inside cover has a light line crease, which is not visible when the locket is closed.
