Victorian Chalcedony Riviere Necklace
An early Victorian rivière necklace crafted in sterling silver featuring a collection of graduated chalcedony cabochons set in collet bezels. The color of the stones varies slightly in a translucent range of silky milky taupes tinged with lavender, with two stones at the clasp exhibiting the strongest blue hue; I love the unexpected bright blue, seemingly random but carved, polished and set with thoughtful expertise.
Details: Measuring approximately 16" long, the original antique box clasp is in strong working order, so the necklace will stay securely around your neck through all manner of adventures. Marked "sterling" on the tongue of the clasp.
Condition: In excellent condition with a light antique patina.
History: Necklaces of this type, usually diamond, were introduced in the 18th century and remained popular through the early to mid 19th with other gemstones employed, and again through the 20th century with diamonds once more taking the lead. In fact, the rivière style has proved to be one of the most enduring since its beginning.
