Victorian Gold & Bloodstone Locket

A striking Victorian locket crafted in 14k yellow gold, circa 1860, featuring a bloodstone of deeply saturated color with a richly dappled iron oxide matrix on the front cover, a beautiful example of this type of jasper. The organic beauty of the stone's pattern is complemented perfectly by the ornately scrolled and chased metalwork.

The deepness of the locket's compartment indicates it originally held a daguerreotype, although it could easily hold a modern photograph it would also be perfect for a small memento like a lock of hair.

Details: Measuring approximately 1" north to south not including the bail. Not marked for gold content but acid tests to 14k. Total weight approximately 11.7 grams.

Condition: In excellent antique condition with a light patina speaking to age and history but no chips or damage to the bloodstone. There is light oxidization to the inside as well as a roman number VII incised, which usually indicates an antique jeweler's catalogue or work number.

 History: Also known as Heliotrope, Bloodstone is traditionally considered a hero's stone, a talisman for strength, bravery and determination in the face of danger: either danger from within or from outside forces. As a healing stone it's thought beneficial for blood, heart and circulatory health, and has been used as a charm to reinforce the bonds of love and affection in romantic relationships.

Christian legend ties its name to the crucifixion and it was often used in Medieval religious carvings pertaining to matyrdom, which led to its also being known as "The matyr stone".
