Victorian Onyx with Diamond Pansy Ring
A dramatic Victorian ring crafted in 14k yellow gold with sterling silver accents featuring a bezel-set black onyx face mounted with a sweet rose-cut diamond studded pansy.
It's possible this was originally a mourning brooch (the ornately chased border is straight out of the Regency era circa 1820-30) that was converted to a ring later in the 19th century; it's beautifully executed and a fine testament to the Victorian jeweler's skill.
Details: Approximately hair under 1 1/8" north to south and about 15/16" east to west across the face. Not marked for gold content but acid tests to 14k and sterling silver. The pansy is crafted in sterling silver.
Size: 6 1/2. Resizable at least two full sizes. Please contact us for details before purchase if you are interested in our sizing service.
Condition: In excellent condition with a slight amount of wear to the surface of the onyx and a couple of light marks visible when the light hits its surface at certain angles. We've chosen to leave the antique patina intact as it brings out the detail and highlights the magical glitter of the rose-cut diamonds.
History: When used in mourning pieces, pansies are a bittersweet memorial blossom, representing the idea that the departed is always present in one's mind and memory, with the diamond adding a note of eternal fidelity.
Black onyx underlining the physical motif underlines the metaphysical as well, considering its traditional use as a protection against negativity and the weight of sorrow, grief and regret.
