Edwardian Saphiret Locket Necklace
I love the elegant simplicity of this antique gold-filled locket: the smooth yellow metal oval has a matte finish that emphasizes the glow of the marquise-shaped saphiret cabochon set in the center. It has a uniquely timeless vibe, able to mix as well with modern pieces as with other antique chains or charms.
Saphiret is an art glass invented in the mid 19th century in the city of Gablonz in what is now the Czech Republic, made by fusing karat gold with blue glass to achieve shimmering and etheral color effects, the depths of which depend on the amount of gold in the formula.
Details: The locket measures approximately 1 1/2" north to south by 1" east to west. It opens to reveal space for two photos, and retains the original photo holders with an unidentified jeweler's hallmark on the inside. There is a small dark shape that can be seen inside the cabochon at certain angles, this is likely the pin used to hold the stone in place. Hung from an antique 24" gold-filled curb chain.
Condition: In excellent antique condition the saphiret is free from any chips or noticeable scratches. The metal surface has a slight patina and minimal oxidization, with some light scratches on the surface inside the compartment.
