Edwardian Salamander Brooch, with Diamond & Peridot
An interesting antique salamander brooch circa 1910, featuring a friendly little lizard crafted in 14k gold with a lemony yellow tint sometimes referred to as "green gold"; set with garnet eyes and along the spine and legs with alternating mine-cut diamonds and peridot, a pretty sparkle against the lightly textured surface.
Details: Measuring approximately 2 1/8" long and 1 1/8" at the widest spread of the feet. Not marked but professionally tests for 14k.
Condition: In excellent condition with a subtle patina and some light wear to the details. The riveted hinge and early safety catch are in strong secure working order.
History: For centuries, the salamander has been considered a symbol of passion due to their believed ability to survive, and in fact thrive in, the searing heat of fire. But if you're a fan of post-modern literature you might remember the salamander as the symbol of authoritative soul-sucking control over knowledge, self expression and free thought as well as the redemption found in justified rebellion against intellectual tyranny a la Ray Bradbury's "Franheit 451".
