Victorian Garnet & Pearl Bracelet

$4,200.00

This elegant antique bracelet was originally a Victorian gentleman's watch fob circa 1850, converted to its present form in the late 19th century, judging by the antique bolt ring clasp.

Crafted in 14k yellow gold featuring a velvety-red emerald-cut almandine garnet surrounded by natural seed pearls as the focal point of the center plaque. The mesh band is flexible and makes the bracelet fit very comfortably on the wrist.

Details:  Measuring approximately 7” long, the center plaque is 1 3/8" by 1 1/4“, and the band has an approximate 3/4" width. The garnet meaures 10.45 mm X 6.30 mm in its setting. Not marked for gold content but acid tests to 14k, the bolt ring clasp is marked 14k. Weighs approximately 30 grams.

Condition: In excellent condition with a few light dings on the back which are not visible when worn. There's also some light wear to the garnet, and a very tiny nibble, both visible under 10X magnification.

History: The engraving on the back of the plaque indicates the original owner's name and address: "S. R. Elliot No. 720 South 2nd St. Phila.,". according to an 1865 city directory, a music teacher named S. R. Elliott did indeed live at that address in the mid-19th century.

720 South 2nd St. is in an area of the city formerly known as Southwark, now called Queen Village; it’s a vibrant neighborhood and one of the first areas of the city to be settled. Just off the Delaware River, it is home to Fabric Row, South Street, and some of the oldest buildings in the city.
