Victorian Miniature Compass with Masonic Symbolism

$375.00

A wonderful Victorian miniature compass fob, designed with the Masonic symbol of architect's square and compass as the direction of travel arrow. I've seen many types of masonic jewels over the years but never one such as this: that it's still in working order and able to find true north is a true joy for the collector.

Details: Measuring approximately 1 1/16" in diameter. The body of the fob is yellow gold-filled, the compass itself has beveled glass covers on each side.

Condition: In excellent condition overall, with a gentle antique patina, some light wear and slight oxidization inside the compass compartment. The glass has a couple of teeny nibbles along the beveled edges and one very faint scratch that's only seen at certain angles and not disfiguring.

History: The symbol of architect's compass and square were used by the Freemason's as a visual metaphor for the boundries of virtuous thought and action the society believed should be observed by all members, a reminder to keep one's deeds "squared up", as it were, with the tenets to which members pledged their loyalty.
