Victorian Amethyst Locket
A beautifully made Victorian locket circa 1870 crafted in 14k yellow gold set with an oval amethyst of excellent clarity and richly saturated velvety color, approximately 8 ct. The compartment is covered by a discreet glass pane on the back, making this wearable as both a keepsake holder and luxe gemstone pendant.
Details: Measuring approximately 1 5/8" north to south not including the large bail and 1 7/16" east to west across the face, with a thickness of about 5/8" including the height of the 8 ct. amethyst. Not marked for gold content but professionally tests to 14k.
Condition: In excellent condition with a light patina and a few light marks but nothing obvious or distracting. The cover can be gently pried up using a thin blade in order to insert a photo or memento. Please send me a message if you have any questions or concerns.
History: Amethyst has a rich and varied gem lore history. Traditionally the stone is said to bring its wearer happiness, love, internal peace and spiritual fulfillment. It has been worn to aid in battling the grip of addictions and alcoholism, in fact the origins of its name are found in the Greek word 'amethustos,' meaning 'sober.'
In 1912 it was adopted by the American National Jeweler's Association as the official birthstone for February and is considered the birthstone for the zodiac sign Pisces. It's also a traditional gift for the sixth wedding anniversary.
