Georgian Revival Chrysoberyl Paste Necklace

$1,600.00

Circa 1915, an antique necklace in the Georgian riviere style, most likely of French manufacture, featuring luminous hand-faceted paste in a rare chrysoberyl-green. The stones are set in silver cups with filigree details on the tear-shaped pendant drops, and foiled so they shimmer like mirrors when the light hits them, their translucent gleam meant to be a dreamy reminder of candlelight on the silken folds of an 18th century ballgown.

Details: Measuring approximately 17 1/4" long with five 7/8" long pendants. Not marked for metal content but professionally tests to at least 900 silver.

Condition: In excellent condition with a light antique patina and subtle wear to the paste and oxidization of the foiling, commensurate with age.

History: Paste is essentially a type of leaded glass which when hand cut resembles the brilliance and sparkle of genuine diamond, or when specially colored the glitter of rare natural gemstones like sapphire and emerald. Developed in the 18th century as an imitation of the expensive gemstone to thwart highway robbers who might make off with the jewelry of blinged out wealthy travelers, it quickly became popular in its own right for its beautiful fire.
