Georgian Music Phrase Intaglio Wax Seal

$1,900.00

Circa 1830 an impressive antique Georgian wax seal featuring a phrase of music intaglio-carved into the agate face. The fob itself is ornately chased in a baroque floral pattern, crafted in 14k yellow gold.

We asked an ever helpful and immensely talented friend to decipher the notes, and it is a playable melody, although to date we have not connected the snippet to a larger composition. Perhaps this is the perfect gift for the classical musician who loves a good mystery.

Details: Measuring approximately 1 3/4" tall with the base 1" by 13/16". XRF tested for solid 14k gold; when this type of seal is crafted in karat gold, as opposed to gold-filled or "cased", they still usually have a lead form for strength inside the cup and the ring at the top.

Condition: In excellent condition with a rich antique patina but minimal wear to the details.

History: Before the invention of an envelope conveniently painted with adhesive along the flap, people used a drop of melted wax impressed with a carved seal to secure the privacy of their correspondence. The carving was done in reverse so the sealing wax would be impressed with the writer's personal motto, crest or insignia in a readable direction: essentially a return address of sorts.
