Signet with Victorian Bloodstone Intaglio "Palmam qui meruit ferat"
Originally the focal point in an antique Victorian wax seal, this bloodstone intaglio was remounted in the 1970s into an antique-style sterling silver signet ring. A rare and beautiful example of this type of jasper, with intensely red iron oxide matrix, engraved with a raised arm bearing a sword in hand atop a crest shield.
The chased motto "Palmam qui meruit ferat" can be translated from the Latin as "Let he who bears the palm (of honor) deserve it"
It's a reference to the days of gladiatorial battle, when the winner was given a palm frond signifying victory. It was also a motto of Lord Nelson, generally considered one of history's, and certainly Britain's, greatest naval commanders.
