Victorian Egyptian Revival Enamel Locket

$475.00

A Victorian Egyptian Revival locket necklace featuring an artistically enameled Pharaoh wearing the traditional royal Nemes headdress. The glass-paned back cover opens with the compartment deep enough to hold a photo, note or other small memento like a lock of hair.

Condition: In excellent antique condition with a gentle patina and surface oxidization, a few dimples on the frame of the back cover and some subtle wear to the enamel. The hinge is firm and the locket stays shut when closed.

History: The interest in Egyptian motifs and design began at the end of the 18th century after Napolean's expedition to Egypt in 1798. However, the greatest enthusiasm was sparked later with both the amazing archeological discoveries of the mid 19th century and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1867. This particular locket is from that era: 1870-1890.
