Art Deco Morpho Wing Sulfide Cameo Necklace

$375.00

An antique Morpho butterfly wing pendant necklace, circa 1925 set in sterling featuring a bas-relief dancing nymph in white sulfide. The iridescent blue backround shifts in the light, changing from twilight-blue to glowing electric teal. The creamy white figure against this gorgeous display is a striking and dramatic combination.

Details: The pendant measures approximately 2" long including the decorated bail, and 1 3/16" wide. Marked on the back for "sterling silver" and "England". Hung on a 20" sterling silver cable chain.

Condition: With a gentle antique patina and a couple of very slight dings to the back of the pendant speaking to it's dignified age. The butterfly wing in in excellent condition, as is the sulfide figure. Often these pieces can be discolored by exposure to moisture or air and the sulfide suffer chips or flaking.

History: Thomas Mott is credited with introducing this type of morpho butterfly wing jewelry at the British Exposition of 1924. Sulphide figures encased in glass have been around since the early 19th century,  a process of encasing a ceramic medallion completely in glass.
