Victorian Scottish Agate Sword Brooch

$790.00

A Victorian Scottish agate sword or dagger brooch, circa 1880, crafted in sterling silver in a dramatic statement size, inlaid with pieces of lace agate and jasper, aka "Scottish pebbles". The stones are incredible in their precision, with a gorgeous variety of color and pattern.

Details: Measuring approximately 3 9/16" long and 1" at the widest. Crafted in sterling silver with a C-clasp and tube hinge.

Condition: In excellent condition with a light patina. No visible chips or scratches on the stones.

History: This style of work has been a traditional Scottish craft for centuries, but in the 19th century Queen Victoria helped propel such "pebble" jewelry to large scale popularity, after she and Prince Albert purchased Balmoral in the 1850s. Known to collect native jasper, agate and cairngorm specimens during walks along the estate, Victoria would sometimes have the stones fashioned into pieces to give as gifts to favored members of her court.
