Victorian Cut Steel Salamander Brooch

$575.00

A wonderful mid-19th century Victorian salamander brooch designed as a friendly little lizard completely covered in hand-cut steel rivets that sparkle with a brilliant gleam. I love that his eyes are tiny marquise-shaped pieces: it's that sweet bit of attention to detail that makes antique pieces so special.

Details: Measuring approximately 2" long and 1" at the widest spread of the feet. The steel pieces are all hand-cut, each one riveted to the backing: an indication of earlier pieces as opposed to later work which consisted of molded rivets attached to a backing as a plate.

Condition: In excellent antique condition. Some of the rivets have light oxidization, as does the back. The tube hinge and C-clasp are in strong secure working order.

History: For centuries, the salamander has been considered a symbol of passion due to their believed ability to survive, and in fact thrive in, the searing heat of fire. But if you're a fan of post-modern literature you might remember the salamander as the symbol of authoritative soul-sucking control over knowledge, self expression and free thought as well as the redemption found in justified rebellion against intellectual tyranny a la Ray Bradbury's "Franheit 451".
