A lovely Art Deco costume ring circa early 1930s, part of a collection of old new stock purchased from a jewelry store closed since 1984. A halo style crafted in sterling silver, the glass "dragon's breath" cabochon in the center is framed by a surround of hand-set paste diamonds; a tiny fairy of electric-blue light dances inside the center stone which ranges from deep amber with a hazy blue undertone to dramatic port-wine red it turns in the light. Measuring approximately 11/16" in diameter with about 3/8" rise above the finger when worn, crafted with a curved saddle so it will sit comfortably face up and not slide side to side. Size 6 1/4 and not resizable due to the chased floral detail that goes all the way around the outside edges of the band. Designed by Bohemian glass artisans to emulate the internal fire of natural fire opal, "dragon's breath" became popular in its own right for the gorgeous play of electric-blue and purple flash inside deep glowing sunset-orange that distinguishes it from other art glass gems of the era. In excellent condition, with a light patina but has never been worn. Hallmarked for sterling inside the face next to the stamp "Martelli Sterling", manufacturers out of Providence R.I. founded in 1931.
