Victorian Snake & Arrow Brooch
A Victorian serpent & arrow brooch with interesting symbolic meaning and-let's be honest, a pretty handsome little snake. Crafted in gold and silver, the snake has garnet cabcohon eyes and natural pearl accents down his back.
Traditionally a serpent has been used to reference eternal love, wisdom, fidelity and immortality. Combined with an arrow, a favorite 19th century metaphor for true love and protection from harm, we can read this as a sincere love token message, possibly originally given by a groom to his new bride.
Details: The brooch measures approximately 2 1/2" long by 3/8" wide. Not marked for metal content but XRF tests to 12k and silver. There is an unidentified hallmark on the pinstem. Weighs approximately 7.3 grams.
Condition: In excellent condition with a warm patina, subtle oxidization and some light wear to the nacre of the pearls. The hinge and C- clasp are in strong working order.
