A lovely late 19th-century 14k yellow gold double-sided locket with a seed-pearl studded frame, hung from a yellow gold-filled Victorian watch chain with a 10k pearl-set slide. Perfect for photos or a small keepsake like a lock of hair; this type of double-sided viewing locket also works well as a "shaker", ready to fill with gems, small shells, pearls, pharmaceuticals or other tiny objects of interest.
Whatever you deem important enough to keep safely close at hand.
Measuring approximately 1 1/4" in diameter not including the attached bail, and the compartment about 1/8" deep. The chain is 24" long, with the slide freely movable.
Slide chains were a type of necklace popular in the 19th and early 20th century designed as a way for women to wear watches or carry lockets, lorgnettes and other useful things. The slide itself was a device through which the chain passed that could be used to tighten the loop of the necklace closer to the neck, though this slide has lost its cork interior and will settle at the top of the locket as shown in the photos.
In excellent condition with a light antique patina speaking to dignified age and some light wear to the glass covers. Not marked for gold content but the locket acid tests to 14k and the slide to 10k.
