An antique Victorian ring circa 1870s featuring seven pomegranite-red garnets set around the curve of a playfully tilted horseshoe, with the band designed as a curled riding crop. Sporting images and specifically horse themes were immensely popular in the 19th century, the horse was after all the main form of transportation and played an integral part in every day life. The ring has the engraved date "1879" on the back; this might commemorate an event or the date of the gift, and is a useful tool in circa dating the piece, adding to its charm. Measuring approximately 1/2" north to south and east to west across the face of the horseshoe, with a slim 1.43 mm band at the the center back. Currently size 6 1/4 and resizable slightly. Please convo me before purchase if you are interested in the details of our sizing service. In addition to its association with horses, horseshoes are used worldwide as talismans for good luck and magical protection. Some believe this stems back to the idea that iron would repel evil, and horseshoes were an available source of the metal for most people. The number seven pops up as significant across many cultures and religious belief systems. It is considered among other things a symbol of completion and perfection. The lucky aspect of it has it's roots in numerology and it's ancient atrological significance. I think combining two such powerful talismans for luck can only bring an amazing amount of good fortune, right? In excellent condition, with a gentle antique patina that picks out the details, emphasizing the ring's antique character. Not marked for gold content but acid tests to 14k.
