Our wonderfully modeled sterling silver fly earrings started out as whimsical Victorian collar buttons. We added the sterling wiggle wire to emulate the meandering and curious fly's signature zig zag flight pattern.
Contrary to my impression of most flies I think there's something sweet about these little guys: a sort of wholesome friendliness. They're not trying to get in your way, they're just trying to get by.
The fly itself measures 3/4" long and the wire gives him an additional 5/8" for a total drop of about 1 3/8". Lightweight enough for everyday wear.
Victorian society was obsessed by all things found in nature and consequently insects were especially favorite subjects for jewelry design in the 19th century. Elaborately jeweled or enameled and often brilliantly realistic bugs could be found adorning the collars, shirt fronts, cuffs, fingers, arms and ears of the fashionable Victorian.
Even the common housefly found itself celebrated by the jewelers art crafted in precious metals and gems. Flies also had symbolic significance and were used sometimes as representations of human mortality and by extension spiritual humility.
To quote Shakepeare, " "...As flies to wanton boys, are we to the gods.."
