Iridescent Maireener Shell Necklace with Antique Clasp
We've strung beautifully antique iridescent maireener shells on silk cord, finished with a vintage 10k safety clasp. Their rainbow tinged glow is magical and completely natural, gleaming with hints of green, blue, purple and pink.
Details: Measuring approximately 17 1/2" long. The beads were originally part of an Victorian strand. The clasp is XRF tested to 10k and has a patent number around the top of the push button indication a circa date of 1965. To open: depress the plunger of the tube with a fingernail and slip the clasp jump ring onto the loop. The plunger has a spring and will pop back into place to close the loop.
Condition: In excellent condition, the shells are free of obvious cracks with light wear, evenly distributed color and vibrant iridescent nacre. They are relatively delicate though and to protect them from breakage should not be worn while engaging in strenuous sports or activity.
History: Maireener shell jewelry still holds an important place in Tasmanian Aboriginal tradition, as it has for centuries. Shell necklaces were originally made as adornment or tokens of honour, as well as valuable objects for economic trade or barter; shells pierced for a necklace have been found in ancient burial sites dating back 1800-2000 years.
